Thank you very much for the time and tips you gave me when I visited you to collect my new horn on Friday.  It plays every bit as well as you said it would.  With an hour or so of blowing it when I got home and then some more on Saturday morning I was confident enough to use it for the concert on Saturday night and managed to bang out the top Bs no problem in the penultimate piece.

Thank you once again for your time and excellent advice.  I have already recommended you to a couple of people and would not hesitate to recommend you to more.  Also I would definitely come to you if I ever needed another horn (don’t think that will be needed) or when it becomes time to get either of them serviced/Wiltshired.

It's Julian Mak who bought a Paxman 35 from you about a month ago. Sorry I haven't replied about the horn, I was enjoying it too much and I forgot about it! Feel free to use this as a customer feedback if it is of any use.

Having played in orchestras, wind bands and in an unaccompanied setting over the past few weeks, I have been more than happy about its tone, response and its ergonomics. Just yesterday there was a section bonding by trying everyone else's horn, and the first remark everyone made about this Paxman was the response and beautiful intensity in the upper range (the second was "Oh it's a comp? I didn't know Paxman did comps!"). The valves are fast without being 'clicky', and there are but minor cosmetic blemishes which I think adds to the character of the horn anyway. The communication and advice provided was excellent, and there was nothing more I could have asked for.

As of sending you this e-mail, I've now started lessons with Bob Ashworth at Leeds, and I'm sure this horn will no doubt help me immensely on my way to get better at playing, and enjoy it even more than I do already.

Got my horn this morning and the sound is brilliant - what a difference!  The lower register is also pretty throaty if you let it and there is so much more of a range in playing softly compared to really loud - the orchestra tomorrow night will be surprised!

F side sounds fab on lower notes!

I love this horn the more I play on it.  My lip is definitely not in playing condition right now, I cannot wait to get the lip in playing condition so I can really appreciate the qualities this horn brings to the conversation! I’m even more impressed now. The horn arrived in Slough at about 09:30 this morning.

I’ve managed to get home and unpack the horn. I must say that your daughter does a very thorough job and I think I now have enough bubble wrap to move house.

Hi! My Paxman arrived safely yesterday morning. It is beautiful and awesome to play!!! It is exactly what I was looking for; a big, rich, warm sound, wide open pretty much all the way around and a very nice high range. Even though it has the big sound I was looking for, I can still play loudly and get a nice edge on my sound when I want/need it. A much easier horn to play than my Holton 178, and very much (but lots better) than my Conn 8D. I haven't had time yet to adjust the tuning, but I'll have time to start on this today a bit. It is very even as far as intonation is concerned, from what I can hear and feel already. The installation of the adjustable finger hook was a very good idea, as it's much more comfortable than some of the other Paxman's that I had played that didn't have one.

You may recall you stopped me buying a student horn and sold me a Holton 280. Just to let you know, the Alex arrived today. And what do I think? Well it's the same horn in appearance and that's where everything changes when I put it to my lips. It blows beautifully - lovely big, fat, rich sound. The Alex sound of olden days only much, much better. Top register is super. I played it during lunch hour and didn't want to put it down. Middle reg is pure, smooth and round and pedal notes really strong and powerful, as I discovered after blasting out that low bit from Shostakovich 5. Valves move like lightening so all in all you have done a superb job on my Alex. I'm really pleased with the work done so roll on next band and orchestra practice. Best of luck to you both in the future. You are very welcome to use this as a testimonial if you wish... PS.. Tone blob is a great addition in aiding tone projection and volume. What more could I want?

The high notes are centred and easy to produce. My mid-stave D is easy on the chops too and generally the horn is effortless to play compared to how it was before being ''Wiltshired'' ... you are indeed a Merlin of the horn :-)

My horn arrived yesterday afternoon. Thank you so much for all the useful care information you included - very much appreciated. The horn was delayed at customs for a few days until all the paper work got sorted out. You might be interested to know that I did not have to pay extra duty -just the provincial and federal sales taxes which total 4%, so I was pleased about that.

I am delighted with my Yamaha horn. This is such a busy time of year and I haven't had as much time as I want to really test it out. However, I have played it a bit and know already that it will be perfect for my needs. It is a beautiful looking instrument as well and is a good size for me. The sound quality is excellent and I do enjoy playing it. I can't wait to test it out with the band at our next rehearsal in January.

I teach deaf children and the Christmas break is about to start in a few days so it won't be long until I can devote extra day time hours to playing and getting to know the horn well.
I am curious about the age and history of the horn. If you have some background information, I would really like to know more about it, if possible.

Hi Alan,

Didn't get around to emailing you again after the horn and the mouthpiece came. But the horn is great. It sounds wonderful and is a joy to play. I play it when my mom tells me to do my homework and then she's quite.

It's now relitively easy to play in the upper registers and I now find myself trying songs and octive higher or lower than I usualy play them with the megafied range I get with the thumb trigger. Its really fun.

We deffinately got our moneys worth, thanks a million.

I got my horn a few weeks ago, and honestly, I was too busy to sit down and

I got the horn, and it seems to be a wonderful instrument. I just played a new 20 and a 23 with Europa bells in a shop in southern Norway, but I would say I like the sound of the single better, so thanks. Did you change the springs, it seems to have much more tight springs than I am used to. Will get used to it though. All in all I am really satisfied with the deal. I`ve tried to compare it both to single and double Hoyers which I have, but this one is in a much higher league. Therefore I thank you for all your help. Hope I can come back to you if there are any problems. Don’t know if I have mentioned it, but I really think your service has been excellent and extremely professional. I wanted to thank you again for all of your help finding the right horn for my daughter. We bought her horn (a Yamaha) in late October of 2005 and she has been delighted with it from the first time she played it. She was a beginner at the time we purchased her horn but we noticed that she seemed to have a lot more confidence with her abilities once she started playing the Yamaha. She seems to learn much easier than her classmates, especially in the higher range. We think that is probably the horn. You explained that the right horn would make a difference.

Christi will be starting high school next year and recently auditioned for high school band and orchestra placement. She attends a rather large school and her junior high band had 280 kids with approximately 110 moving into high school next fall. There will be three concert bands next year with the three bands combining to form a large marching band. She auditioned very well and will be in the top symphony, made of mostly upper classmen as either first or second chair. Most of her classmates will be in the 3rd band (concert band). Her older brother was pretty happy for her. He will be a senior (trumpet I) and next years head drum major for the marching band. Thanks again.

I got the horn today and it is great! It's very responsive and projects wonderfully, and has a great centered sound. I love playing it! It plays very differently from my Holton (but much better!) Thank you for the tips on taking care of the valves. I need to buy some Blue Juice this week, but I'm not familiar with 3 in 1 oil. I'll try to find it. Thank you so much for all of the help with getting the horn. It was a very educational and helpful process!

My son absolutely adores the new horn and his playing and scales have improved 20 fold on the pile of rubbish that the school supplied him with. I will try and get a picture of him playing the “silver beast”, if I can stop him grinning for one minute! The duck's foot has helped him no end and he is just so positive now.

I very much enjoyed my trip to Gloucester a week ago, and of course the outcome! I have delayed getting in touch again as I wanted to be able to tell you about the chamber music day I had on Saturday - the new instrument's first real outing. It was fantastic - and I didn't do too badly either! Large quantities of music were consumed between 9.30 and 6.00! Spohr Nonet, Mozart E flat & C minor octets, Beethoven Octet (2nd horn with all those arpeggios), Ravel Tombeau de Couperin (arr for wind dectet), and Mozart Piano & Wind Quintet to finish!!

It is a different world now for me, and I am so glad I did at last what I have been thinking of for years! Should have done it sooner of course in one way, but on the other hand it is only now that I have the time to practice that it is really worth while.

So all in all a great improvement, and a very happy (Paxman) customer!

Serendipitously, I received my ToneBlob in the mail today right after I emailed you earlier. Wouldn't you know.

I like it! I tested it out on the Paxman tonight and it does all the things it's touted to do - of course the horn is great to begin with but the blob makes the tone even notchier and fuller, more secure, and provides the extra darkness (in my mind) and projection that I desired. It was a little difficult to decide whether to put it on the 2nd or 3rd rotor - they were both pretty close in sound quality (compared to 1 and the change valve) - but in the end I decided on the 3rd.

I've been missing my computer for a few days, completely crashed and had to go to the "data hospital." But now that I have it back, I want to tell you more just about what I love about this horn. I know you realize this stuff, but bear with me because I really want you to know why I am so happy. First, and this sounds a bit arrogant, sorry, I didn't know I could play so well. No more fishing expeditions! That's what nice note centers will do for you, huh? It is so responsive as well. The lower register, what I'm currently capable of reaching, comes out SO much easier and speaks so much better.

I just wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying the Alex 107. I bought it from you a few months ago but only recently had the chance to play it in an orchestra. A friend of mine was conducting Beethoven 7 and asked me to play. I had a wonderful time! The Alex is so solid I didn't miss a single high B! I had some trusted colleagues in the audience who assured me I had a great sound and good intonation. They also said I made the high notes seem effortless. As a longtime 8D player that was something I had never heard. I am still getting used to the horn but so far everything is working beautifully. I can't wait to take some auditions with it.

Just to say that the ToneBlob is everything I expected; my lower register, which has always been compromised in tone and power, is now being regularly referred to in a most complimentary manner. I have more carrying power, the tone is rock solid with no wavering in pitch at higher dynamic levels and the instrument really feels like a big brother Alex double in some respects. I play a lot of work in ensemble with church organs and large congregations (in sometimes confined seating circumstances) and my baby Alex single Bb/A(+)/F ext is punching above its weight now and being heard, and powerfully.

I have finally had a chance to put the new horn to some serious work and I must say that I am very pleased. When I say "put to work" I really do mean it; I played 1st in a concert that included Don Juan yesterday. The horn does exactly what I wanted it to do that my Geyer didn't; in the extreme dynamics the edgy sound is perfect. It doesn't ever get ugly at all like my Geyer did because of the small bell. The conductor and members of my section commented that my tone was much less harsh and more refined in the loud passages than before. You were very right in saying this is a very sophisticated horn. It has a very wide range of tone colors to choose from rather than the sort of "on or off" effect I got with the Geyer. I can easily choose how much edge I want in the sound and I can't overblow it. It even gets that nice fizzy sound in piano if I want it to. It does take a little more effort to play than the Geyer, but this is compensated for by having all of the notes slot in exactly the right places. (No more funny G!) Overall, I think I made a very good choice. (Though I am drooling over that Rauch you just put up in your sales gallery. It will be a long time before I will be able to afford one of those...)

The horn arrived in great shape just as you indicated it would. It is indeed exquisite. From the contrast of the rose brass to the nickel slide receptors, to the engraved valve caps, to the incredible quality, I can't say enough. To compare it to the Conn from an appearance and quality standpoint would be unfair. They are not even in the same league. You certainly get what you pay for. Besides a few odd blemishes here and there, this horn is in outstanding shape. It reminds me of a fine piece of jewellery.

This horn speaks very easily. Very little effort is required compared to the 8D. Also, the high register on the Bb side is so much easier. To your point, the tighter valves really make a difference. Response is also extremely crisp. I love how the horn plays.

Overall, getting used to the Bb fingerings was not as bad as I originally anticipated. My speed is improving daily.

I haven't really had a need to use the F alto side of the horn (except for a bit in practice) because the Bb side is certainly secure enough for my needs.

So to summarize, am I disappointed in my purchase? Absolutely not! The horn plays exactly like you described. It has allowed me to try a horn with tighter valves and I now know for sure this is what I want. I am also a far better Bb horn player than I ever was and am making progress daily.

By the way, I decided to play the Conn again after playing the Alex for several weeks now and I can't believe how difficult the Conn is to play. It's amazing how much extra energy I have been unnecessarily expending all these years.

My ToneBlob arrived yesterday afternoon and of course I installed it right away and did a shake down. I found the best position for it pretty quickly and I can tell the difference in the tone. The notes on the whole horn seem more centered and secure. The high register in particular is more secure. I have an Eastlake 8D and it appears to be a pretty good version of this particular horn.

Thanks very much for the service you do. I really like the ToneBlob and I think that it will be a factor in my recovery from several years of not playing.

I just wanted to let you know that Max received his horn just a couple of days after our last contact. He is soooooooooo happy with it. I have attached a photo for you to look at. This was taken just after he unwrapped his new horn. Max is working on his new instrument and can produce some remarkably good sounds already. The Scherzer has been delivered. It has arrived without damage in transit. The horn was packed so well that I can't imagine damage occurring except by crushing or some other extroardinary occurence.

This horn is truly marvelous. It is just as you represented. The Bb side has the sound and response that is all of what I wanted; and the F extension blows freely and has an open and smooth sound. All this with the facility and colors that feel and sound right to me!! This Scherzer is exactly what I wanted but really couldn't have described in words before I played it. Somehow you read through the lines of our correspondence and understood what I was looking for. I need to work with the hand position (my hand feels just a little too large) and get all the fingerings programmed into my head. Past that, the horn feels really right in my hands, not too light and not too heavy.

My new horn arrived last Friday. And I'm very pleased with the instrument! It plays easily and the intonation is good. Nice sound in all parts of the register. Valves work as new.... My tutor was impressed - he's a Paxman man and was highly skeptical to this American horn. We're now both conviced that I've made an excellent buy.

The horn that I got from hornsAplenty was quite up to par. The valves are just as slick and silent as I hoped, and all the slides work well and are well cleaned. The horn is very responsive in the high register, and is, now that I am getting used to it, very responsive in the lower register as well. Mr. Wiltshire gave me some very useful hints on playing and making sound in general. He was very prompt in answering every email I gave him with every inquiry of which I could think. The horn came to my house with incredible speed! I was very surprised as to the hastiness with which I received my delivery. I enjoyed working with Mr. Alan Wiltshire not only because he was funny and smart but also because when I was working with him, it was like I was only working with him....as if he didn't have a huge job to do with other customers. He was very assuring of my purchase, and worked with me very much to help me get the best deal and help get me the best horn that I could get for the money I had. He never ceased to amaze me with his devotion to me. I was very astounded at his professionalism. I was a little shaky at first, as it was my first major horn purchase, but he was very assuring and after I got the horn, there were no doubts. Just thought I would let you know that the horn has arrived safely and in mint condition. I have never received a more securely wrapped package and the miles of bubble wrap has certainly kept the cat amused! The horn is a dream and without doubt the best instrument I have played. Also excellent is the crispness of the valves which feel as though they ought to belong to a brand new instrument and not on a second hand one. I would like to thank you for all your help and expert guidance throughout the purchase of this beautiful instrument and I have no hesitation in recommending your company to anyone thinking of buying a horn. Wow!! It was like setting off a stick of dynamite when I launched into the Beethoven Seventh passages. I took delivery of the horn today, and I have to say it is awesome! After about five minutes of warm up and five playing around on the horn I have decided that under no circumstances will I ever play another American horn! The horn is absolutely superb, light-years ahead of my Holton. I will definitely be recommending Paxman horns, and your services in particular, to anyone looking for a fantastic new horn. This horn is really amazing - after warming up a little I was able to just belt out gorgeous, fat high Cs! Like I said before I love the horn and I will definitely be recommending your services.

My new horn just landed today and it is totally fab! It was not damaged at all – just as you said, it came wrapped up like a baby. But the most fantastic thing is the way you guys listened to me, analysed what I was really looking for – rather than what I thought would enable me to do what I wanted – and then came up with the very horn to enable me to achieve it. Dear Mr Wiltshire: Thanks so much for your incredible advice and help in the purchase of my Paxman Model 40. I’d always wanted to get that big, fat, Hollywood sound and thought you could only do it with an 8D, along with all the associated high-range difficulties. How wrong I was! Now I sound like Myron Bloom but I don’t split high notes. Not that he did, mind you. But I used to. And your ‘lessons’ on right hand technique have revolutionised my playing – I now know that I can sound bright or dark as I choose. You should be some horn professor or something!
